Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry is a separate form of dentistry that focuses on the appearance of a patient's dental façade. This type of dentistry is focused on fixing or modifying problems with the appearance of a patient's teeth or any unsightly oral problems. Cosmetic dentist also treat regular dental problems but their main area of practice is geared towards fixing dental abnormalities, disfigurations, or correcting aesthetic dental problems caused by disease, defect, or accident. Even everyday natural dental activities like chewing, grinding, clenching and even brushing can cause fillings or other dental work to crack, chip or wear down. The seal between the tooth enamel and any restoration work can deteriorate letting food particles in and causing decay or letting bacteria develop in the void, sometimes into an abscess, and that can cause pain and discomfort.

In a recent study, by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), pictures of eight cosmetic dentistry patients were shown to 528 Americans. They were asked to judge the pictures according to how attractive, intelligent, happy, successful in their career, friendly, interesting, kind, wealthy, popular with the opposite sex, and sensitive to other people they were. The photos were divided into two sets of four individuals each, both before and after cosmetic dentistry was preformed on them. The respondents were not told of the dental procedures. However, they were asked to make a quick judgment about the individuals in the photos based on the previous ten characteristics. All the categories rated higher, but the most notable and dramatic responses were on how much more attractive, popular with the opposite sex, wealthy, and successful in their career the group with the cosmetic dentistry rated.

Cosmetic dentistry includes several procedures such as:
Cosmetic dentistry can help patients achieve the dental appearance they've always wanted. It can make teeth whiter so they look healthier, correct chips or reshape the enamel of your teeth to make your teeth more symmetrical, help hide cracks in teeth making them appear stronger, or even create laminates that bond with teeth to fill gaps or mask hard to whiten teeth. A smile is the most noticeable feature on your face and cosmetic dentistry can make it one of the best features. Nothing can replace good dental care at home or professional maintenance of your teeth, but did you know that you can help keep your teeth clean and your gums healthy by the foods that you eat.

Foods that help in dental maintenance:
To become a licensed dentist an individual must complete eight years of study. A specialist must complete further training to be licensed as a dentistry specialist in any of the nine specialized fields. Most dentists will execute routine endodontic therapy, routine periodontal therapy, uncomplicated exodontia, restorative procedures, prosthetics and placing implants. In addition to general dentistry there are nine specialized fields of dentistry.

Some of the specialized dental procedures include:
  • Strawberries are a natural teeth whitener.
  • Lemons are a natural bleaching agent for your teeth.
  • Grainy and fibrous fruits and vegetables like celery, carrots, cucumbers, apples, and pears, create a fibrous mixture with your saliva that scrubs your teeth and gums.
  • Cheese helps to remove food particles from teeth.
  • Chewing sugarless gum helps your mouth produce saliva that cleans and kills bacteria.
  • Baking soda can be used as tooth polish to remove stains.
  • Hydrogen peroxide can be used as a rinse to kill bacteria and disinfect the mouth.
  • A straw can help reduce the staining from dark fluids like coffee, red wine or dark sodas.
