Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry is sweeping the country.  You no longer need to let your dental health suffer because of fearing to go to the dentist.  If you are among the many people who experience anxiety and even panic when it comes to visiting the dentist office, sedation dentistry might be the best option for you.

Oral conscious sedation dentistry uses mild medication like Triazolam or Halcion in pill form to induce sedation.  This also allows the dentist to perform more dental work on the patient in each visit eventually reducing the number of visits for a patient.  Oral conscious sedation allows the dentist to work on the patient while they are in a minimally depressed level of consciousness.  This means that the patient is still able breath on his/her own and can respond to physical stimulation and verbal command. This form of sedation is more effective and less risky than general anesthesia.

Inhalation conscious sedation dentistry or oxygen sedation uses nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to sedate the patient.  This type of sedation dentistry works in similar way as oral conscious sedation in that the patient retains control of breathing and other bodily functions.  This type of sedation is the most common form used by dentist. Inhalation conscious sedation usually results in the patient falling asleep during the procedure.

Sedation dentistry affects the patient with a mild form of retrograde amnesia, meaning the patient will have little or no remembrance of the dental treatment.  However, the patient will be able to leave the dentist office in the care of a family member and rest comfortably for the duration of the day, often free from any pain and with less need of pain medications.

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry Include:
  • Safe and easy to monitor
  • Relieves anxieties associated with dental visits
  • Allows the patient to return home accompanied by family
  • Patient rests comfortably at home remainder of day
  • Patients report less need for pain medicine afterwards
